Hello, my name is Shawn.
I began blacksmithing in 2004 and established Dean Cutlery in 2014. As a creator, I relish the act of crafting with both my mind and hands. The art and processes of manufacturing captivate me. It's inspiring to realize that individuals can envision something, whether it's a painting, an advanced machine, architecture, or a tool, and then bring it to life in the physical world as if by magic.
I strive to integrate wood and iron into every project possible, and I have a particular affinity for giving new items an aged appearance, a style I refer to as 'rustic.' This aesthetic is evident in much of my work, which includes furniture, hand tools, metal sculptures, and knives. To enhance my skills in knife forging, I am an apprentice bladesmith with the American Bladesmith Society. The ABS has been instrumental in advancing my aspiration to perfect the craft of knife-making, and I am privileged to share my knowledge with the next generation.
“It might look good, but it’s not a knife until it cuts”. Knife sharpening is an essential skill for any knife maker, and it's something I strive to improve every day. A sharp knife not only enhances safety by reducing the force needed for cutting, but it also increases precision and efficiency in food preparation and other cutting tasks. Having spent so many years crafting and sharpening my own custom knives, it seems fitting to offer my sharpening services to the public. Thus, in 2024, Dean Cutlery and Sharpening was created.
Additionally, I am a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu blackbelt, trained under world champion Jadyson Costa. BJJ is a passion of mine. The discipline required to attain a black belt has shaped me into a better individual, artist, and, above all, a husband to my wonderful wife, who is also a BJJ black belt. When I'm not forging hot metal in my blacksmithing studio or sharpening knives for my valued customers, you can usually find me on the mats, honing my mind and body in lieu of steel.
